Architectural Folly

Spring 2024, Compositional Studies in Architecture with Steven Dwyer

Building off of the work of Bernard Tschumi in the Parc de la Villette, this project called for the design of a new architectural folly placed somewhere on the site of the Theodore Wirth Regional Park just outside of Minneapolis. It began with iterative modeling based on select precedents, but once the site was finalized, the actual design started to come together. I ended up designing this folly as a spatial experience of compression and expansion, light and shadow. Rough copper provides a textured yet uniform materiality to the folly, and it is navigated by following slices of daylight brought in by deliberately placed openings. In the largest chamber in the middle, a rain or snow pool incorporates the natural weather conditions of the park.
