Morgensol Gallery
Fall 2023, The Art of Daylighting with Mary Guzowski

With a focus on daylighting design, the Morgonsol Gallery is designed specifically to showcase oil paintings by Swedish artist Nick Alm. It is a redesign of a gallery in the Clyfford Still Museum by Allied Works Architects. The interior display space is kept dark to preserve the delicate paintings, but a bright terrace space allows visitors to inhabit the warm sunlight rendered in Alm's works. Natural light is let into the gallery through small slices in the textured plaster walls. The ceiling is slanted, going from 20 feet at the entrance to just 8 feet at the wall where the paintings are hung. This compression allows the viewer an intimate experience with the paintings which so delicately depict life, nature, and light. The wall that separates the indoor and outdoor spaces is angled both vertically and horizontally, and creates another area of compression when transitioning between the two spaces. It also catches more of the sunlight on its face, highlighting the stucco walls and reflecting more light into the gallery space.
