SMK Art Cube

Spring 2023, Architectural Foundations with Soren Amsnaes, DIS Copenhagen

The Art Cube is a proposed extension of the Statens Museum for Kunst, the Danish National Art Museum. The surrounding grounds are open to the public, and this project is set between the main museum building and the smaller Hirschsprung Collection building. Inspired by works of space and light artists such as Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell, the Art Cube is just as much of a work of art itself as it is a space for exhibiting art. The interior is comprised of black reflective surfaces, suspended lights, and a cantilever bridge stretching through the center towards the singular artwork on the opposite wall. From the exterior the cube appears unassuming and simple; it is approached from an angled bridge which stays level as the ground dips. At night the silver bridge is illuminated with small ground lights which extend into the main path through the park, guiding the visitor towards it. This project was completed with an emphasis on hand renderings and model building. Pencil sketches, watercolor, and model experimentation were the promary methods of exploration and design used.
