Sundial Cafe

Spring 2023, Architectural Foundations with Soren Amsnaes, DIS Copenhagen

The Sundial Cafe was designed to sit on the northern shore of Sortedams So in Copenhagen. In an effort to create a new space for enjoying the lake, the Sundial cafe is an oasis of comfort and Hygge, even in the winters with the shortest days. An unobstructed view southward along the lakes allows the maximum amount of daylight to enter the circular cafe through a glass wall in all seasons. A semicircle of seating within the cafe partially protrudes over the lake, allowing visitors to feel as if they are floating on the water. The defining characteristic of this cafe and the lanscaped park that it sits on is the sculptural triangle which cuts through the cafe, almost as if it grew up from the ground. Angled due North, it creates a sundial. Numbers on the roof as well as paths in the park mark the hours, both daily and seasonally. The shadow cast by the triangle roughly tells the time between 8 am and 5 pm depending on the light angle of the present season. As both a practical building and a landmark, the Sundial Cafe is an invitation to the lakes, and a love letter to Copenhagen in all its seasons. When seen from Dronning Louises Bridge it offers a modern reflection of the existing Sopavilionen, and a new way to experience the beauty of Copenhagens lakes
